PHILADELPHIA (March 26, 2025)Verified Voting Strategy & Policy Director Mark Lindeman released the following statement in response:

“The Trump administration’s executive order seeks to undermine the constitutional framework that ensures elections are administered by the states; a great strength of our election system lies in its decentralized structure. There are contradictions throughout the order’s proposed requirements for voting systems. Most obviously, paper records are already everywhere except for Louisiana. The call to decertify certain systems fails to address the unclear carve-out for voters with disabilities. Additionally, as the name suggests, adherence to the Voluntary Voting System Guidelines (VVSG) is left up to the states. Updating these standards involves critical stakeholder input and public comment periods, and not only is equipment replacement costly, many states require a specified lead time for counties to replace voting systems—factors the order does not adequately consider. Election offices are already underfunded, and recent federal cuts to services they relied upon make preserving and protecting the integrity of our elections that much harder. Election processes exist for a reason: to ensure accuracy, security, and, most importantly, that voters’ voices are heard.”
