PHILADELPHIA (June 29, 2026) — Today, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled to uphold state postmark laws in Watson v. Republican National Committee, preserving the ability of election officials in many states to count mail ballots cast and postmarked by Election Day, even if postal delays cause them to arrive shortly after. In response, Verified Voting’s President & CEO Pamela Smith released the following statement:
“The Court’s decision is a direct message to all voters who rely on mail ballots, including military and overseas voters, rural voters, seniors, and people with disabilities: Your voices matter equally to voters who can easily access a polling place. Voters can verify and track their mail ballots in most states, and mail voting processes are subject to rigorous review. This ruling ensures that a postal delay outside of any voter’s control does not erase a lawfully cast ballot and supports election officials’ ability to capture the will of voters.”
